Everyone Thinks They Have the Best Dog
And None of Them Are Wrong - W.R. Purche
Is the Bedlington Terrier the Right Dog for You?
Temperament
The Bedlington Terrier is a very intelligent and adaptable small to medium-sized non-shedding dog. They are characteristically affectionate and love their people, making them the ideal breed for both young and old. From endless play energy with children or quiet moments with adults, Bedlington Terriers make wonderful family companions.
Lifestyle
Bedlington Terriers can easily adapt to a house or apartment style living, but do require a lot of exercise. They are built for speed like a coursing hound, so daily walks or fenced yards are recommended. However, Bedlingtons have not lost their terrier-type instincts to peruse the ground for critters and small vermin, so be aware of this innate behavior. Their hunt drive might make living with small household animals like cats, hamsters, or rabbits difficult, but not impossible. Visit our Teamwork & Titles section for instinct test events and activities that partner you with your dog. These events cater to the Bedlington Terrier’s specialized hunting abilities in a controlled environment.
Coat & Care
The Bedlington has a unique breed specific coat enhanced by a breed specific trim that gives our dogs their lamb-like appearance. Described in the breed standard as crisp with a tendency to curl, the coat is soft and linty to the touch. The Bedlington Terrier is considered a non-shedding breed. And Bedlingtons rarely, if ever, have a doggy scent or odor. Like most non-shedding breeds, the Bedlington coat must be groomed and trimmed on a regular schedule, or it will mat. Every 6-8 weeks is recommended, but our show dogs are often groomed once a week to maintain their stylish trim and coat condition. And unless you learn to groom yourself, professional grooming is an ongoing lifelong expense that should be considered before owning a Bedlington Terrier. Another downside to the breed’s non-shedding coat is that the ‘outdoors’ will stick to the coat like Velcro and not roll off like Teflon. Grass, leaves, weeds, and snow will cling to every part of their body and require brushing or baths for removal. This is our honest assessment of the Bedlington coat, but do not be discouraged. Your Bedlington can be kept in a short pet or utility trim rather than an overall full show trim. We only recommend maintaining the look of the breed specific trim on the head, tassels, and tail. Visit our Grooming section for more information.
Lifespan
Living with a Bedlington Terrier is an absolute joy! Those who have had the opportunity to live with each gender agree that both males and females are wonderful companions. Their normal lifespan is approximately 11 to 16 years.
