FastCAT

RUN! Bedlingtons! RUN!

At the Starting Line...

AKC FastCAT is a natural fit for the Bedlington Terrier. Beneath the breed’s elegant, lamb-like appearance lies a true running terrier—fast, agile, and driven by instinct. FastCAT offers Bedlingtons a safe and exciting outlet to express their athleticism while strengthening the bond between dog and handler.

Built for Speed

Originally bred for speed, endurance, and determination, Bedlington Terriers were designed to pursue quarry across open terrain. FastCAT taps directly into this heritage by allowing the dog to chase a lure at full speed over a straight 100-yard course. Many Bedlingtons quickly discover a love for the game, showing surprising acceleration, focus, and competitive enthusiasm once released.

FastCAT is where the Bedlington Terrier showcases its true nature—fast, driven, and joyful in motion. For owners seeking a fun sport that celebrates the breed’s athletic heritage, FastCAT is an outstanding place to start

Eligibility & Registration

Bedlington Terriers may participate in Fast CAT once they reach 12 months of age and are physically sound. Dogs must be AKC-registered or hold a Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL). Because FastCAT emphasizes instinct and movement rather than formal training, it is an excellent entry sport for Bedlingtons new to AKC performance events.

Practice & Preparation

Although Bedlingtons are naturally athletic, preparation is still important. Regular conditioning through brisk walks, free running in safe areas, and controlled sprinting helps build muscle and stamina. Maintaining proper weight is especially important for this breed’s distinctive structure. Short chase games or flirt pole play can help awaken the lure drive in young or inexperienced dogs. Before competing, owners should ensure nails are trimmed, pads are in good condition, and the dog is warmed up prior to each run to reduce the risk of injury.

Expectations at a FastCAT Trial

Fast CAT events are welcoming and well suited to first-time Bedlington Terrier exhibitors. On arrival, dogs are measured for height, checked in, and assigned running times. Bedlingtons typically run one at a time in a fully fenced lane, allowing them to focus solely on the chase.

A release handler holds the dog at the starting line, while a catcher—often the owner or a trusted friend—waits at the finish line to safely collect the dog after the run. Many Bedlingtons thrive on the excitement of the event atmosphere and the opportunity to run without distractions.

...Cross the Finish Line

Participating in FastCAT provides Bedlington Terriers with excellent physical exercise and mental stimulation. The sport builds confidence, reinforces focus, and supports overall conditioning, all while honoring the breed’s historical purpose. Many owners find that FastCAT enhances their dog’s performance in other activities such as agility, barn hunt, or earthdog.

Titles & Progression

Bedlington Terriers earn points based on their speed, adjusted for height, and can work toward AKC Fast CAT titles:

  • BCAT (Basic Coursing Ability Title)

  • DCAT (Distinguished Coursing Ability Title)

  • FCAT (Fast CAT Champion)

These titles highlight consistency and enthusiasm rather than direct competition, making Fast CAT an enjoyable long-term goal for both novice and experienced owners.
