The Highest Honor Bestowed Upon A BTCA Member
In 1991, Alan Willemsen presente a perpetual trop to The Bedlington Terrier Club of America in honor of his late mother, Constance M. Willemsen. The Board of Directors graciously accepted this trophy and determined the award to be the highest honor bestowed upon a BTCA member who has demonstrated a betterment of the Bedlington Terrier breed and The Bedlington Terrier Club of America.
Constance (Connie) Willemsen, along with her father, Col. PVG Mitchell founded the famous Rowanoaks Kennels in 1936. Col. Mitchell was one of the BTCA founding members. Rowanoaks Kennel was in existence until Connie passed away in 2003. The American Kennel Club has since retired the Rowanoak kennel name.
Connie was considered by many to be an authority of Bedlington Terriers. She was internationally known and honored throughout the dog world. In 1941, the famous AKC dog writer, Arthur Frederick Jones, published an article in the AKC Gazette, Rowanoaks Kennels Brings Fresh Glory to the Bedlington. James P. Crowley, the Executive Secretary of the AKC, stated Constance M. Willemsen had given more to purebred dgos and the Bedlington in particular, than anyone else he knew. And years later, the American Kennel Club took the very unusual step of retireing and protecting the Rowanoaks Kennel name forevermore. Dog historians, aficionados, and many in the highest offices of the American Kennel Club placed Connie among the elite of the purebred dog world.
Criteria for the Constance M. Willemsen Breed Betterment Award includes unselfish dedication and significant contributions to the Bedlington Terrier Breed, resolute determination to make the breed better, preserving the Bedlington Terrier’s natural quallities and traits, and most importantly, possessing the highest ethical standards.
Connie produced well over 100 Champions, won many Best In Shows, judged and mentored with a template for high ethical standards by her conduct. Connie was the BTCA 6th President. She also served The Bedlington Terrier Club of America as a leader in canine health. In th 1960’s, Connie cleared her entire line of retinal dysplasia. When Inherent Copper Toxicosis (Copper Storage Disease) showed up in the breed, Connie led the fight to eliminate this genetic disease. Her breeding program only used the best health tested sires and dams. Late past BTCA President and longtime friend, Ray Herman, wrote of Connie, “I must point out that I was not the only Bedlington lover she helped. If she saw that your desire to learn was rea., she would go out of her way to teach you to succeed and still do things to better the breed. She was the real thing and probably one of the few people that came along in a lifetime. Connie’s love for the breed was genuine, and I couldn’t have had a better mentor. Hopefully, over the years, I have been able to pass on to others some of what I learned from her. She was a remarkable women and truly the doyenne of the Bedlington Terrier. My biggest regret was more people did not know her like I did.”
