The Bedlington Terrier Wellness & Rescue Association (BTWRA)

The Bedlington Terrier Wellness & Rescue Association (BTWRA) is a 501c3 tax exempt charity, established 2005, for the express purpose of acting as the voice for the individual Bedlington, who may, for whatever reason, need an advocate to act in his/her best interest.

The BTWRA rescues stray, abandoned, relinquished and/or impounded Bedlington Terriers and provides foster care, with the eventual goal being the adoption/placement of the rescued dog. Additionally, the BTWRA develops resources for basic and applied health and welfare programs to improve the quality of life for Bedlington Terriers and their owners.

We maintain a nationwide list of potential homes to adopt Bedlington Terriers. You can go on the list by just asking, contact Linda Freeman at [email protected]. If a dog becomes available in your area, then we will do a detailed interview to determine if you and this Bedlington are compatible.

The BTWRA makes a yearly donation to charities that directly impact the breed, specifically at the AKC CHF. For instance, in 2025 we donated $2,500 to the AKC CHF designated to a research project studying Kidney & Urological disease. In the past our donations helped fund discoveries in the research of how pancreatitis can lead to heart damage. We funded a project to study the relationship between diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease, and we funded a project to explore the genetics of separation anxiety. An important disease that we helped fund involved a study of leptospirosis, something that any dog can catch, but especially working terriers.

Our work in rescue is not so public, and something that we rarely brag about. That is because we are acutely aware of the privacy of all parties. Details about the dogs we rehome as well as the new forever homes are kept private by the BTWRA. Our work is sporadic and completely unpredictable. We can rehome 3 dogs one month, and no dogs for six months, then another dog needs our help. Be assured that we are working behind the scenes, quietly and professionally.

We produce a calendar every year, published in August, as our yearly fundraiser (Contact Linda Freeman to order.) We also accept donations, memorials, tributes or inheritances to help fund our work. Many of the dogs that we rehome do not involve an adoption fee, rather, these poor dogs may need expensive medical treatments. These dogs are brought to the best health possible before adoption, or in some cases, the new forever owner picks up the dog directly and heads to the vet on our behalf. In these cases, we cover the vet bills to make the dog healthy.
