Lucy
Heyman finished the AKC conformation title on her first Bedlington
Terrier in October of 1979 and joined the Bedlington Terrier Club
of America (parent club) the same month and has been a member continuously
ever since. In 1981, she launched an ambitious breeding program
and has developed a successful line which has produced a total of
128 conformation Champions that she personally owned, and many others
that contributed to significant breeding programs around the country.
Her dogs have also excelled in obedience, agility and earthdog events,
a great source of pride to her.
Lucy
was an English major at the University of Wisconsin and her first
writing assignment for the breed appeared in the 10th Anniversary
Manual of the Bedlington Terrier Club of Greater Chicago. She also
edited, published and distributed an educational booklet on the
subject of Copper Toxicosis in the Bedlington Terrier for the Chicago
club. Then in 1986, Lucy collaborated with Dr. Cynthia Cook in producing
an article for Pure Bred Dogs: The American Kennel GAZETTE where
Lucy wrote the sidebar to this scientific article which described
a breeder's role in controlling the disease. She and Dr. Cook served
on the parent club's health committee where Lucy remained in service
for over two decades. Lucy has served the parent club in many capacities
including establishing a very popular awards program, one of the
original members of the rescue committee and still serving, and
as Corresponding Secretary for three terms. Earlier this year, Lucy
received the coveted Willemsen Breed Betterment Award at the club's
Annual Meeting.
Lucy
resides in Spring, TX with her husband and her Terriers. Her daughter
Nicole is an administrator and faculty member at Tulane University
in New Orleans.
